How to Read a One-Line Diagram

A one-line (or "single-line") diagram is the shorthand electricians, engineers, and estimators use to show how power moves through a building without drawing every individual conductor. Learn to read one and you can follow a whole distribution system -- utility service to the last panel -- in about a minute.

The symbols you'll see most

Every firm's drawing set uses slightly different line weights, but these core symbols are close to universal:

SymbolWhat it means
□□□Utility source / meterWhere the diagram starts -- the point of utility interconnection, usually top-left or top-center of the sheet
◯◯TransformerTwo overlapping circles (or a rectangle labeled "XFMR"); primary voltage in on one side, secondary out the other -- check the kVA and voltage ratio printed next to it
Main breaker / OCPDA filled square or rectangle on the line, usually labeled with amperage (e.g. "400A MB") -- this is your overcurrent protection, matching NEC 240
□/Disconnect switchA square with a diagonal line through it -- a manual disconnecting means, often shown ahead of equipment like an AC unit or elevator controller
PanelboardA rectangle labeled with a panel name (e.g. "2P5", "LP-1") -- this is where branch circuits originate; cross-reference the panel schedule for what's actually on each breaker
Generator / ATSA circle with "G" or a labeled box for an automatic transfer switch -- shows where standby power enters the system and what it's rated to carry
Ground / grounding electrodeThree descending horizontal lines, shrinking in width -- ties to NEC 250, shown at the service and often repeated at separately derived systems

Why this matters beyond the exam

Print-reading questions show up directly on Journeyman and Master exams in most states, but the bigger reason to get fluent is the job itself: a wrong read on conductor size or OCPD rating on a service change isn't a paperwork mistake, it's a code violation and a possible failed inspection. Estimators who can trace a one-line accurately price a bid faster and with fewer change orders than ones who can't.
