EMT is a metallic raceway, and the parts that join it have names that tell you what each one is for.
Everything on the bench threads together. Knowing which part is which is the difference between building the system that was specified and building one that merely assembles.
Lay the parts out and name them. There is the tubing. There is a coupling, which joins one length of tubing to another. There is a connector, which is what enters a box. And there is a locknut that secures the connector to the enclosure. Same family, four jobs, and the two that get confused are the coupling and the connector.

The parts are named for what they connect. Tubing to tubing is a coupling; tubing to enclosure is a connector. The job decides the part.
